Corsica

In Sotta, a small village outside of Porto-Vecchio, are a number of cork tree farms. Cork is still used to bottle wine in France. The tree bark is harvested for its regularity, density and sustainability. The cork trees nestle in between granite rock and olive trees lined lanes in the idyllic agricultural lands with only the cicada and wind as company. The island has been carefully guarded environmentally for centuries, surrounded by marine reserve and forested with pine trees planted high into the mountains, it is different to other Mediterranean islands. These series of water colours were painted en plein air to capture the immediacy of colour and spirit of the place.
